![]() | Summer Student Reilly Perovich is an Undergraduate Researcher thanks to the UBC SURE award, who started in May 2024. Reilly recently obtained a B.Sc. Hons at UBC where they majored in Biology. Their honours thesis was on the topic of Prenatal Alcohol Exposure and its effects on the microbiome, immune signalling molecules, and short-chain fatty acids, encompassing bioinformatics and statistical analysis, conducted in the Parfrey Lab. Currently, they are working on 3D visualization of Cannabis sativa glandular trichomes using Focused Ion Beam - Scanning Electron Microscopy (FIB-SEM) with the Samuels Lab. Reilly has had a diverse set of academic and research experiences including molecular biology work on Cannabis at Langara College, studying and researching at Bamfield Marine Science Centre for a year - including an ongoing multi-year anemone symbiont study, and multiple other microbial research projects including investigating Chlorarachniophytes in the Keeling lab, along with projects including diatoms, kelp, and prokaryotes in the Parfey lab. Reilly aims to attend graduate school to study examples of complex interactions like endosymbiosis and organellogenesis, and their application in the areas of cell biology, biochemistry, and ecology, on interesting samples from across the tree of life.
